Color is an excellent way to make a web page interesting, easy to navigate and memorable.

In HTML the color values are coded as a set of six alpha-numeric characters, two characters each for R(ed) G(reen) B(lue). Since these colors are in hexidecimal and interact with each other in sometimes surprising ways, reliance on a good reference is a real time-saver. The standard chart of non-dithering colors created by Doug Jacobson can be found at http://www.geocities.com/dansimpson99/webhelps/color2.html.

Code Conversions between the RGB Hex Triplet codes used in HTML and the values used in most retouch programs (Jasc's PaintShopPro, CorelPaint, Adobe Photoshop, etc.) can be very useful in creating web pages with integrated graphics and subtle but eye-catching backgrounds, fonts and table colors. These programs use a 0 to 255 code for the R(ed), G(reen) and B(lue) values; in hexidecimal that same code becomes 00 to FF. A soft greenish beige, for example, would have RGB values of R-204, B-255 and G-153 when sampled in PaintShopPro. On the conversion table below:

The html code for the color is entered as "#CCFF99". This is the color being used as background for the alternate columns on the table below.

Note: The information on this table was taken from a RGB Conversion Table created by Nancy Webster, unfortunately no longer available at the original site. All credit for this conversion information properly belongs to the original author. The web page layout, explanation of RGB conversion and any errors which may have crept in are mine.
